THIS WEEK IN WEST HEMPSTEAD: Week of February 25, 2026
Snow Wrap-Up Across West Hempstead
What a week! Between plowing, shoveling, outages, and neighbors helping neighbors dig out, the community spirit was on full display. School closures and LIRR concerns made for a rough start — and what’s with the lack of mail delivery lately? Don’t put the snow gear away just yet… forecasters are already watching another possible storm for Monday.
School Budget Pressures Continue
The NY State property tax cap stays at 2% for a fifth straight year, even as Long Island costs keep rising. Local school officials say transportation and special education expenses continue to climb — something to watch as we head toward the May 19 school budget vote.
Sauly’s Pizza Gives Back
West Hempstead’s own Sauly’s Pizza joined over 250 Long Island pizzerias donating $5 per pie sold to support the family of fallen Nassau Officer Patricia Espinosa — another powerful example of our community stepping up when it matters most.
Community Scholarship Fund
Invites are out for the May 14 Annual Dinner honoring this year’s scholarship recipients at Plattdeutsch Park Restaurant in Franklin Square. Check their website for details.
Rams Basketball Update
A tough end to a great season as West Hempstead fell to Seaford 76-71 in the Nassau Class A quarterfinals. Alex Davis led WH with 18 points and CJ Feglia added 17. Proud of this team and the season they gave us!
At the Library
West Hempstead Library cardholders can catch Project Hail Mary at AMC Roosevelt Field — movie starts at 10 AM, doors at 9:30. Popcorn and soda included!
Purim Is Coming!
The library has a full Purim book display ready in the children’s room — perfect for getting into the holiday spirit.
Local Treats Alert
And speaking of Purim… you know where to find some of the best hamentashen in town — Riesterer’s! Plus, a special this week on cherry pies.
