This Week in West Hempstead – Week of March 12th
We’re starting off today with potholes — because after the winter storms, much of West Hempstead is looking more like a moonscape than a roadway.
The good news? Our public post on Facebook appears to have had an immediate impact. Within a short time, a few of the crater-sized potholes on McKinley Avenue were filled, proving once again that when the community speaks up, things can start to move.
Our other big stories this week center around education in West Hempstead.
Our recent interview with the Diamond Charter School leadership team sparked a spirited discussion across social media, with many residents weighing in. The conversation is clearly just beginning, and there are still many questions the community wants answered as the proposal continues to unfold.
At the same time, we are now approaching school budget season, and some of the numbers being discussed are raising concerns. One issue that continues to stand out year after year is transportation, which represents a significant portion of the district’s spending. It’s a complex challenge and it’s something that requires a long term solution.
