The West Hempstead’-based scouts participated in the Klondike Derby at Hempstead Lake Park, an annual event held by Boy Scouts of America during the winter months based on the heritage of the Klondike Gold Rush. (see videos below)
A Klondike Derby is a competitive way for Scouts to use their skills in fun-filled ways. In addition to these skills, they will need to use teamwork and communication skills in order to excel at the various events. This local Derby included BSA troops from around the county. The event had the scouts form troop teams that built sleds and competed in a race to complete a course around the local park.
At each station in the event, troops signed in and completed a task such as preparing an outdoor meal. BSA units have been running Klondike derbies since 1949. The next Kosher Klondike will have the troop travel to Camp Hidden Valley in Loysville, PA from February 17-20. The troops scout master is Lon Samuelson.
