The people have spoken in this year’s election for the board of Commissioners of Sanitary District 6.
Challenger William H. Rockensies easily won a seat on the six-member board, with an estimated 1,992 votes, versus 276 for incumbent Frederick Senti. The tally must still be confirmed by Town Officials. Board members must stand for re-election every six years.
Rockensies, a West Hempstead resident and engineer, was also recently appointed to the board of the Nassau County Industrial Agency.
To run, candidates must collect a minimum of 25 signatures of district residents and reside within the district for 30 days prior to the election, said Michael Cairo, secretary to the board and operations manager.
Cairo said incumbent members generally win but it is not uncommon in recent years for challengers to prevail. Board members meet every other week, for which they receive a $7,500 annual stipend. “The responsibilities are overseeing and policies and procedures of the Sanitary District,” Cairo told us.
