The New York State Police are actively investigating the shooting of Trooper Thomas Mascia, which was reported on October 30 along the Southern State Parkway. In a released statement the department confirmed:
“State Police is conducting an investigation into the circumstances involving Trooper [Thomas] Mascia that was reported on Oct. 30. This remains an ongoing investigation and further specifics are not being released at this time.”
Police added that they were no longer looking for the Dodge Charger that Mascia said was involved in the shooting.
Initial reports indicated that Trooper Mascia was shot in the leg by a driver in a vehicle parked near Exit 17 in West Hempstead. He was subsequently hospitalized in stable condition at Nassau University Medical Center.
Authorities initially sought a Dodge Charger allegedly parked on the side of the road at the time of the incident. However, the search has since been called off. There are reports that both the body camera and dash cams were turned off.
In parallel, the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office is conducting its own investigation. Nassau DA Anne T. Donnelly stated:
“My office, in partnership with the New York State Police, is actively investigating certain inconsistencies identified in the reporting of a shooting incident involving New York State Trooper Thomas Mascia last week on the Southern State Parkway. The investigation remains ongoing at this time, and we refrain from further comment until it is completed.”
A search warrant was executed at the injured trooper’s home. Echo was on the scene as multiple official vehicles and authorities were seen around his home along with regional and local news organizations.
