A 29-year-old Lakeview man, Azzm Khan, is accused of attempting to set fire to the Young Israel of West Hempstead and damaging the synagogue’s entrance, according to Nassau County police.
Investigators allege that Khan set a lawn sign on fire and tried to slide it under the synagogue’s door. After that attempt failed, police say he then placed the burning sign in a bush, which caught fire. He repeatedly kicked the synagogue door, causing damage.
Police say the investigation began when a witness reported damage to the side mirror of a Nassau County police auxiliary vehicle at Hall’s Pond Park. Khan was charged with third- and fifth-degree arson and two counts of third-degree criminal mischief.
The West Hempstead Echo will share updates as more information becomes available.
