Cops Seek Tips In Local Hit and Run

Police are asking for your help to apprehend a driver who seriously injured a pedestrian on Nassau Boulevard in the early hours of Oct. 27.

West Hempstead resident Ariel Dori was attempting to cross the boulevard between Washington and Gaynor at about 6:48 a.m. when a late-model white SUV-type vehicle made a U turn and struck him. Dori, who was on his way to work, briefly had his foot pinned under the car wheel and shouted to the male driver, the only occupant of the vehicle to move.

“He knocked me down and landed on my foot,” Dori told The Echo. “I yelled and screamed for him to back off.” Dori said he was “100% sure” the driver was aware of what happened when he left the scene. The driver fled toward Hempstead Avenue from Gaynor Place.

After police and the Hatzalah Volunteer Ambulance Corps arrived, Dori was taken to Winthrop University Hospital where he was treated for four fractures in his ankle and foot that will likely require later surgery.

Anyone with information about the incident or possible camera footage of the vehicle is asked to call the NCPD 5th Detective Squad at (516) 573-6553.

The incident took place just hours before a local community-wide meeting to discuss a rash of pedestrian and vehicular accidents and how the town can improve road safety.
