Nearly 10 months after the Echo Park pool facility closed its doors for an extensive roof repair project, the facility began welcoming swimmers again this week.
The reopening on Saturday (10/14) came two weeks after the hoped-for date set by Donald Clavin, supervisor of the Town of Hempstead (which runs the pool), as expressed to Echo last month.
And for the first time since the pool closed due to the Covid pandemic in 2020, the men’s and women’s steamrooms, saunas and exercise rooms are reopened.
The glass roof repair that caused the indoor pool closing was followed by undisclosed issues with the outdoor pools, which resulted in neither pool opening during the busy summer months. During that time the public had no access to information about the pool progress
via the Parks and Recreation website.
On its Facebook page, the town cited the following upgrades:
- Brand new filter replacement for a cleaner, safer swimming experience
- Variable VFD motor system to save the town thousands on electrical usage and reduce our carbon footprint.
- Fresh pool liners and a repainted main deck.
- Reinforced main support beams for added safety.
- Completely rehabilitated walls in the indoor pool.
- Improved ventilation system for better health benefits and reduced humidity.
- New lighting system throughout the complex.
- Upgraded electronics, including televisions
- Skylights with improved caulking and reinforced glass to eliminate leaks.
These upgrades will come at a cost, though: Family membership has risen sharply to $655 for the full year for district residents ($795 for non-residents), while individual membership is $327 for residents, for non-residents. Discounts apply for seniors and handicapped swimmers. For information, call the pool office at (516) 483-7400.
It was announced in late 2022 that the facility at 399 Nassau Blvd. would need an extensive overhaul and modernization due to aging infrastructure. Staff at the facility routinely told members and guests they had no further information. .
In 2018, the facility underwent a $218,000 renovation after a closure of about three weeks.
