Update August 8th:According to reports in Newsday, a Freeport man was speeding, driving without a license and had a blood alcohol level more than double the legal limit when he struck another car on Hempstead Turnpike early Monday morning, killing a six-year-old and injuring four others, Nassau County prosecutors said Tuesday during his hospital bedside arraignment.
Jorge Bonilla Gutierrez, 18, was arraigned on charges of second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree assault, three counts of third-degree assault and driving while intoxicated.
Original Post: One person was killed early Monday morning with five others injured in a serious crash on Hempstead Turnpike between Westminster Road and Broad Street, by the old Wholesale Liquidator building. (see images below) (initial police report below)
Nassau County police said a 2005 Nissan sport utility vehicle, traveling “at a high rate of speed” on eastbound Hempstead Turnpike, crashed into a parked 2009 Toyota Corolla 2:22 a.m.
There were three occupants in the Toyota, one of whom was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. Two pedestrians also were standing near the vehicle when it was struck, police said. The seriousness of their injuries was not immediately available.The investigation is ongoing, as of 10:30 a.m., with traffic rerouted past the accident scene.
