John Shaud, President of the West Hempstead Historical Society Celebrates His 90th Birthday

Lesley McAvoy and John Shaud of the West Hempstead Historical Society

This past Sunday the West Hempstead Historical Society celebrated the 90th birthday of John Shaud.   John was born in Brooklyn and served in the US Air Force Third Communication Construction Squadron in Anchorage Alaska during the Korean War work to install radio relay antennas radio stations and telephone systems in brutal cold and perpetual darkness. He was awarded good conduct and national defense metals and also received a marksman award after serving.

After serving in the military John used his training to pursue a career in the phone company. He married his late wife Cathy and bought a home on Henry Street in West Hempstead where he has resided for decades. Johne has enjoyed a long and interesting retirement. He was president of the West Hempstead Historical Society and a member of American Legion Post 1087. He was also the 2007 West Hempstead person of the year.  In 2021 he was the grand marshal of the West Hempstead Memorial Day Parade.

One thing John is known for is his the amazing displays that he has set up at the West Hempstead Post Office and he also was responsible for a replica of the Chestnut School bell tower for children to ring on its anniversary.  John is a tremendous asset to the West Hempstead community for his depth of knowledge and history and we at Echo wish him a happy 90th birthday!
