Library drops mask mandate

Library drops mask mandate

The West Hempstead Library held a virtual board meeting Monday night. The meeting had an unusually large attendance with 20 members of the public, who were anticipating a discussion on the COVID restrictions at the library.

The library board unanimously voted, pursuant to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s school mandate and CDC guidelines, to immediately rescind the mask mandate at the library. The board will also discuss in executive session opening up more public spaces to pre-pandemic levels.

The library received a grant to expand the children’s area by removing shelves, installing bins and building a half wall to better segregate the area. An architect and flooring contractor have been in the building advising on options.

They discussed waiving late penalties pursuant to other libraries in the state but shelved a formal decision until the Area Library Directors group issues an opinion on the topic.
