WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY — UPDATE as of noon 10/31:
UPDATE: As of noon (10/31), the suspect remains at large with a massive search ongoing. The trooper has been identified as Thomas Mascia, 27. The trooper applied his own tourniquet after being shot multiple times by a .22 caliber gun. The shots came from a dark sedan off to the side of the highway. The trooper came out of surgery this morning. His family is with him at Nassau County Medical Center.
Previous coverage: A New York State trooper was shot in the leg late Wednesday night along the Southern State Parkway. The incident occurred just before midnight in the westbound lanes near Exit 17 in West Hempstead, according to state police.
The trooper from Troop L covering Long Island, is now in stable condition and being treated at a nearby hospital. Authorities are actively investigating the incident.
The suspect, who fled the scene, was reportedly driving a black sedan with a New Jersey temporary tag (997636T) and custom matte gray dual exhaust tips, according to state police.
Following the incident, all westbound lanes of the Southern State Parkway near Exit 18 were closed for several hours, with traffic resuming around 6 a.m.
