Halloween mischief turned ugly last night when a group of teens were observed leaving messages on cars sprayed in shaving cream, including one that said “Hitler.”
Nassau County police promptly responded to calls and shortly had identified a group of teens, and detectives were seen questioning them. Parents were observed by witnesses picking up their kids at the scene and reprimanding them. It is currently unclear whether charges were filed.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman reportedly visited the scene to oversee the investigation. No permanent damage was reported and volunteers quickly assembled to clean the affected cars.
We will have more on this story as details emerge.
The NCPD recently launched a hate crimes initiative making it easier for the public to quickly report information directly to detectives who investigate such cases and for police to track the incidents.
The Nassau County “Stop The Hate!” program establishes a Bias Incident Hotline (516-500-0657) to report incidents or text photos, with a promise that all calls are returned during business hours. Photos can also be emailed to combatbias@pdcn.org. A separate hotline, (800) 244-TIPS, is for information about bias incidents, with a $500 reward for tips leading to an arrest.
