In a highly charged local budget re-vote, the school budget, which supports a school district of 1,700 students, narrowly passed.
The budget is estimated to increase property taxes by 1.5%, down from the original 2.14% proposal.
The budget carves out more than 6 million dollars for bussing and special education – a hot button subject in West Hempstead where 44% of the students attend private school compared to 12% for Nassau County.
