School Budget Update: School Board Decides On No Changes To The Budget

Voting May 7, 2022 Middle School, West Hempstead

BUDGET UPDATE: After the school budget was voted down 1,370 to 1,169 in the May 15th election, the school board, by a vote of 6 to 1, adopted a new budget that was unchanged from the budget that was put before the West Hempstead voters in May.
Echo will carry an official statement from the Board once released and we have a commitment from Joel Press and Karen Brohm of the Board to talk to us prior to the elections.
Reaction against the Board’s decision has been swift. An email written by David Lazar, the newly elected Board member, states: “May 31st 2023 will be known to me as a very sad day in the history of West Hempstead. A budget vote has been turned into a vote for Democracy. In my search, I can not find one other district that had this same audacity to ignore voters. It may have happened, but it is not normal.”
Clearly the battle-lines have been drawn as we get closer to the June 20th revote.
