Amid the pouring rain, residents were joined by members of the West Hempstead and Lakeview fire departments, police, boy scouts, clergy and civic, state and local representatives remembering those lost 21 years ago. The assembled stood under rain-soaked tarps singing God Bless America and our state, county and town representatives spoke. As the names of each of the community members lost that day were read aloud, a bell was rung and the family members who were left behind were mentioned. Boy scouts left a flower and candle on the memorial following each of the names. The fire chiefs laid a wreath and a bugler played taps.
It was a truly beautiful program coordinated by the West Hempstead Support Association.
