Segment 1: Local Government & Politics

  • Hempstead Supervisor Donald X. Clavin Jr. Won’t Seek Reelection
    • Hempstead Town Supervisor Donald X. Clavin Jr., currently serving his third term, will not seek reelection in November.
    • Clavin declined his nomination shortly before the Monday 5 p.m. deadline, according to Nassau County Board of Elections official James Scheuerman.
    • His decision gives the Nassau County Republican Party until Friday to nominate a replacement.
    • His 2025 budget includes a 12.1% tax levy increase, the largest in Hempstead in over a decade.

Segment 2: Community & Schools

  • Referee Joe Gaskin Saved by Longtime Friend Jennifer Keane
    • Jennifer Keane, Wantagh School District’s athletic director, led life-saving efforts for referee Joe Gaskin, who collapsed during the Nassau County Class A title basketball game on March 8.
    • Keane acted quickly, assisting with CPR and preparing an automated external defibrillator (AED) before paramedics arrived.
    • Gaskin was later diagnosed with a heart parasite and is recovering.
  • Local Scholarship Recipients Announced
    • The selection committee has awarded $2,500 scholarships to six outstanding students from three schools: Waldorf, HANC, and West Hempstead Secondary School.
    • Recipients:
      • West Hempstead Secondary School: Juan Francisco Mejia, Yeris Nicol Alvarado Funez, Constance Berry-Rowley, Christina Guerrier
      • HANC: Noam Traeger
      • Waldorf: ThuThuy O’Halogan
    • They will be honored at a dinner on May 8th at Plattdeutsch Restaurant.

  • New Security Technology for Houses of Worship
    • Nassau County Executive Bruce A. Blakeman and Police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder will unveil new safety technology to improve security and reduce response times for houses of worship.
