THIS WEEK IN WEST HEMPSTEAD — JANUARY 7
A difficult start to the week with two serious pedestrian accidents, including a fatal hit-and-run in Uniondale and another incident in Malverne that left an elderly woman in critical condition. Police have made arrests in both cases as investigations continue.
In community news, the West Hempstead Community Support Association has officially returned to its original name — West Hempstead Civic Association. Congratulations to President Maureen Mahoney and Executive VP Neal Rosenblatt, who were also named West Hempstead Persons of the Year by The Herald.
A social media controversy unfolded last week on the West Hempstead Jewish Community Facebook page after a map of Jewish establishments sparked heated debate and was ultimately removed.
Also this week:
• The Burger King on Hempstead Turnpike is set to close
• HANC & the West Hempstead School District will host The Empowered Child program on February 2
• Scholarship applications are now open for the West Hempstead Community Scholarship Fund (deadline Feb. 6)
• Support the West Hempstead Community Scholarship Fund by dining at Gino’s Pizzeria on the first Wednesday of each month
And a reminder: Riesterer’s Bakery offers great sugar-free and gluten-free options to help keep those New Year’s resolutions on track.
