Halls Pond Cleanup Meeting Recap
Last night, the West Hempstead Community Support Association (WHCSA) hosted a packed meeting at Veterans Hall (7/29) to discuss the long-neglected state of Halls Pond. Over 50 residents attended along with County Legislators John Giuffre & Bill Gaylor, Parks Commissioner Darcy Belyea, and Public Works Assistant Commissioner Connie Petrucci.
Key Takeaways:
-
Halls Pond Cleanup: The man-made pond is clogged with debris despite a trash filter system. Residents are pushing for monthly cleanouts instead of quarterly.
-
Dredging Update: Parks began silt removal using a Harvester (several truckloads removed) but work is paused by DEC over wildlife concerns. Permits are underway to restart.
-
Wildlife Concerns: Stop feeding ducks and geese—it worsens pollution. Animal groups can help with unwanted fish or turtles.
-
Safety Alert: Rabid raccoons confirmed in the area. Report sightings to 516-227-9663 (day) or 516-574-6154 (after hours).
-
Playground Improvements: A new, durable surface will be installed this fall (playground will close temporarily). Residents also asked for more benches, a crossing signal on Nassau Blvd, and playground expansion.
