  • Teacher Abuse Allegations: A former teacher at Cornwell Avenue Elementary School is under investigation for allegedly physically abusing at least one second-grade student. The West Hempstead Union Free School District reported the incident to the Nassau County Police Department. Superintendent Dan Rehman confirmed that the teacher has not been employed with the district since the previous school year.

  • Hempstead School District Budget Crisis: The Hempstead School District is facing a projected $34 million budget deficit for the 2025-26 school year, primarily due to rising charter school tuition payments, which are expected to reach $106 million for over 3,700 students next year. In response, the district plans to close David Paterson Elementary School and implement staff layoffs. Officials are seeking state intervention and a reassessment of funding formulas to address the crisis.
