Convenience stores are best known for coffee, snacks and Slurpees, but on a recent Friday local consumers had a chance to sample or purchase some health-conscious vegan food.
Oceanside-based Plant Daddy Kitchen, founded by partners Daniel Shuman and Dan Caracciolo, set up temporary shop at the Hempstead Avenue 7-11, offering free tastes of stuffed dates, “soisage,” peppers and onions, hummus and felafel.
All products are certified kosher, with gluten-free options. Temporarily stocked in the refrigerated section were felafel or soisage half wrap/salad combos and dates stuffed with specially made peanut butter.
The Echo sampled all the delicacies for you and can report they are delicious, even for non-vegans. We took home two wrap combos ($10.99 each) and the dates ($9.99).
Shuman said he’s in discussions with the franchise owner to provide the concession on a regular basis, considering West Hempstead a healthy market for new kosher and nutritious offerings. The Echo will keep you up to “date” on future announcements.
