In a close race for the open school board trustee seat, newcomer Burt Blass defeated Jennifer Johnson by only 41 votes, 912 to 871.
In addition, West Hempstead now has the distinction of being the only town in Long Island that had its school budget voted down 1,003 to 734. The proposed budget of $71.39 million would have raised spending 3.61% and taxes, 2.14%.
A new budget proposal will have to be submitted.
Residents took to local West Hempstead Facebook community sites and loudly voiced their concerns and alternatively support for the new trustee and the defeated budget.
