Where’s the beef?

On Monday night (7/31) there was no shortage of it at Chabad of West Hempstead, one of the town’s fastest growing congregations. More than 150 people enjoyed a carnivore’s delight of ribs, steak, kebabs, burgers and more provided by I&D Glatt kosher supermarket

The Ribfest event originated more than 20 years ago and has evolved over the years from a Friday night Sabbath meal, said Rabbi Yossi Lieberman of Chabad. After an interruption by the Covid pandemic, it roared back this year with a weekday all-out barbecue event, complete with craft beer and exotic cocktails, provided by Barrier Brewing Company of Oceanside.

At $100 per plate as suggested donation, more than $18,000 was raised for the congregation, which plans to expand to larger premises in coming years to accommodate membership growth (Echo coverage here.) A $5,000 raffle prize was awarded to local resident Abraham Peller.

The event was initiated by member Charles Weissman and this year’s event honored the memory of his mother, Marilyn, who passed away earlier this year.
